Overview

Special education in Nebraska runs on the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) plus state rules administered by the Nebraska Department of Education. Local districts deliver the services.

Nebraska uses the federal vocabulary. The team that writes the plan is the IEP team, and the plan is the IEP. Texas terms such as ARD are Texas specific and do not describe Nebraska practice, so we do not use them on these pages.

We do not publish Nebraska day counts or deadline numbers. Timelines have exceptions and they are updated by rule. Confirm anything time sensitive with Nebraska Department of Education materials and with your district in writing.
